Hello,
I am 38 year of age and had to have all my teeth pulled three years ago. I have had two sets of dentures made but I have an uncontrollable gagging reflex when I put in the upper denture. I cannot wear the upper denture without gagging and throwing up thus expelling the dentures within 5 minutes.
Since I have no teeth and am very self conscious about it, I do not go out in public anymore and can not work. My diet is also very poor as I can only eat soft food.
My only option seems to get dental implants. Does anyone know If I will still have a gagging issue with dental implants? My gagging seems to come from the top denture pushing on the roof of mouth just where my sinus holes are. I have tired numbing agents, salt, ect.. on the top of the denture to reduce the gagging but nothing helps at all.
I live in Atlanta , Georgia and am looking for affordable dental implants. I suffered nerve damage in 2000 and am disabled only receiving $699 a month from the government. I know that dental insurance does not cover implants but has anyone worked with getting financing for people who are disabled, to get dental implants at a reduced rate?
Since I have been disabled for the last six years I have not had much to spend my money on so I do have some money In savings specifically for dental implants as they are my number one concern and seem to affect every other part of my life.
Can someone recommend a good dental implant specialist who works in Georgia or is worth the plane fare to go see, who is affordable and has a good reputation. Also any links for finical help would be great too.
Thank you for your time,
Jay Lyons

bunch of my tooth hurts bad and i was checking for some implants feedback info on this site but havent found any thing yet. look for some good info before you spend money.
health care in poland and india is next to US and costs peanuts. you can enjoy 3 month vacation - lodging, boarding, implants and crowns for decent budget. | | Poor Taste?

My advice to you is to find out if you live near a dental school or university or hospital with a dental department. They can help you on a sliding scale fee basis and you will get excellent care because they are on the cutting edge of all new procedures. For implants, they can offer you less than half price. See what's near you and make an appointment. Their consultations are generally free and they can give you all your options. | | Poor Taste?

Hi Jay
Sorry to hear about your experiences. I too have a bad gagging reflex and am wearing a 'flipper' that onlt partially obstructs the roof of my mouth - so not so bad.
I'm older than you by around 8 years, so would think you could get implants. You've probablt seen the websites that advertize this.
As for the "implanting" this should be no problem at the front and side but the back teeth on the top are often a problem to implant - sinus lifts, bone grafts, etc. And NO guarantee. Still sounds like a better option than now eh?
I'd agree with the above psoter, find the biggest dental school (university of Georgia.like that - nothing less) and go there.
Bear in mind this will still take you around a year to complete - and could still cost around 1-2 thousand dollars each (maybe a bit less at a school).
Good luck mate! | | Poor Taste?

Hi Jay
A denture fixed to dental implants is unlikely to make you gag. I work with a dentist in Croatia but I guess that may be too far for you. http://www.thedentaltourist.co.uk | | Poor Taste?
